This post tries to provide me (or anyone interested) with a checklist of items that should be backed up when reinstalling and reformatting your system. I always forget the same kind of things, so this is a reminder to not forget them again.

  • Personal Internet Favorites
  • Personal Outlook PST and Archive files
  • Local Document and Settings files (any software license I bought may reside there)
  • Windows Fonts Folder
  • All the documents and data in the My Documents folder
  • Personal Certificate Store and custom Trusted Certificate Roots
  • Personal Disk Encryption Keys
  • Desktop Files and Backgrounds
  • Export Outlook Configuration, so it can be easily restored

And also, it's important to remember the software I really use in order to reinstall the system again. So here it's a list of the most common software I use to perform my work (lot of small tools missing, but they are no essential to get up to a working state):

  • Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite
  • SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
  • SQL Server 2005 Management Console
  • Visual Source Safe 2005
  • Visual Studio Team Explorer
  • Office (actually 2007 Beta)
  • Flexwallet 2005 (nice Smartphone wallet to keep some secrets)
  • ActiveSync (now it's not needed with Vista RC1)
  • ImgBurn (free CD/DVD Burning Software and ISO Creator)
  • Windows Live Messenger
  • Windows Live Writer
  • Red Gate SQL Bundle 5

The next system is going to be reinstalled this weekend. I'll update my Vista preRC1 to VistaRC1.

  • Keep in mind not to use any accent in the name of the user.
