As a developing "hacker", I couldn't agree more. I think too many developers use comments and their own familiarity as a crutch versus taking the time to view their code as a living document that needs to be comprehensible to outsiders.

I've never thought about the developer's narcissisms idea but I'm not sure narcissism were one of the main motivations to refactor code. The fact is, sadly, most people rarely refactor and they should because of the reasons you gave, not because of narcissism.

I think code rewriting is a good thing if the base code is not too big.
Only when the project is finished you have the whole view and can make it better.

A lot of people love to learn a new instrument just for the fact that when they have company over they can simply begin to play right then and there for them. One of the greatest feelings in the world, said by many people and artists is just having a group of people over and everyone begins to jam together for an afternoon or an evening.
People all around the world consider the piano to be one of the most diverse instruments ever. The sound that comes from it is beautiful and soothing, so what's stopping you from learning to play classical piano music? Nows your chance, even if your free time is limited.

It is fairly common in C# code to see an object be instantiated using the "new" keyword and then having its fields and/or properties set. Until C# 3.0, this could only be done by instantiating the object, storing it in a variable and then doing assignments to the various properties. Thanks so much for your sharing.

Good article and a nice summation of the problem. My only problem with the analysis is given that much of the population joined the chorus of deregulatory mythology, given vested interest is inclined toward perpetuation of the current system and given a lack of a popular cheerleader for your arguments, I'm not seeing much in the way of change.

I've been blogging since last 18 months on a non-profit initiative (OM Careers -
http://www.omcareers.org/blog). Somehow I survived the first year & only recently I reached the milestone of 100th post (including my blog posts at other blogs). I was wondering how much % of the bloggers reach this milestone. I don't think it will be more than 1%. What do you say? I read somewhere that there are over 200 million blogs in total. Also, in your opinion, what (passion, discipline...?) does it take on a blogger's part to reach this critical milestone?
